HSMAI presented the 2010 Lifetime Achievement Awards at the Adrian Awards Gala in New York City on January 31, 2011 to an audience of over 800 industry leaders.
This year's honoree for The Albert E. Koehl Award for Advertising was presented to Mr. J.W. Marriott, Jr., Chairman & CEO, Marriott International, Inc. The Withrop W. Grice Award for Public Relations was presented to Nancy Friedman, Nancy J. Friedman, Public Relations.

And we are proud to recognize Nancy, both for her in-depth understanding of the travel industry, as well as her strategic work in media relations. Nancy is highly regarded by peers for her innovation, and by her clients for her results.”
The Albert E. Koehl Award was established in 1975 to recognize those individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of the profession of advertising in the hospitality industry. The award was named in honor of Albert E. Koehl, an early pioneer in hotel advertising who was a founder of Koehl, Landis & Landan, and the author of the first textbook on hotel advertising. The first recipient of the Koehl Award was H. Victor Grohmann, co-founder of Needham & Grohmann, who was involved in hotel and travel advertising for more than half a century.
Known throughout the industry for his hands-on management style, Mr. Marriott has built a highly regarded culture that recognizes the value of Marriott employees. Today, approximately 300,000 employees are serving guests in Marriott managed and franchised properties throughout the world.

The Winthrop W. Grice Award was established in 1989 to recognize those individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of the profession of public relations in the hospitality industry. The award was named in honor of its first recipient, W. W. “Bud” Grice, CHME, who served as the Senior Vice President of Marketing at Marriott. His legendary use of creative and innovative public relations methods helped insure the growth and development of Marriott into the global company that it is today.
Friedman has had an extensive career in travel, entertainment and destination public relations. She founded Nancy J. Friedman Public Relations – which specializes in travel, hospitality and lifestyle public relations – in New York in 1987. With her “no stone unturned” media philosophy and keen instinct for finding a story, Friedman has generated thousands of client headlines during her career – from stories in every section of The New York Times to glossy features in magazines, broadcast and online outlets.
